A founding partner of the firm with over forty years of experience in taxation and business law, Sydney counsels clients in all matters related to personal and corporate taxation. He has extensive experience in matters of domestic and international taxation, voluntary disclosures, estate planning, corporate reorganizations, and planning for real estate transactions. Sydney also provides strategic guidance to clients regarding commercial transactions and shareholder issues.
Sydney has valuable experience in dispute resolution with both the federal and provincial taxation authorities and has earned a strong reputation as a skilled negotiator. Sydney is renowned for his ability to craft practical and effective solutions to difficult taxation and business challenges.
Sydney presents regularly on current developments in tax matters to members of the accounting and legal professions. He has previously lectured at McGill University and Concordia University. Sydney is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the International Fiscal Association, and the Canadian Bar Association. He is a former governor of the Quebec Bar Foundation.
Sydney received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sir George Williams University in 1971 and studied law at McGill University, graduating with honours in 1974 with a Bachelor of Civil Law. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1975 and the Law Society of Alberta in 2013. Prior to co-founding Sweibel Novek in 1994, Sydney was a senior tax partner with a prominent firm of chartered accountants in Montreal.
